The Collect Third Sunday After Trinity

The Collect Third Sunday After Trinity

THE Give a lift to 1549:

Lorde, we beseche thee compassionately to heare us, and unto whom thou hast geuen an heartie desyre to pray; graunt that by thy mightie ayde we may be defended; knock down Jesus Christ our Lorde.

THE Give a lift to 1662:

O Lady, we beseech thee compassionately to go down with us; and let somebody have that we, to whom thou hast perfect an healthy yearn for to pray, may by thy influential aid be protected and reassured in all dangers and adversities, Through Jesus Christ our Lady.

COMMENTARY:

This increase, from the Gregorian Sacramentary, was directly for this day in the Sarum Missal, and translated from gift by Cranmer. The type was recast and disdainful for the BCP of 1662. The continental use in material form in the Missal of Trent knew this as the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost and directly an just modern increase.

Thoughts

The Twelve, observing their Master at prayer, were prepared extremely conscious of the drabness of their own prayer lives. They invented to Him, "Lady, teach us to pray." We greatly have neither the yearn for nor the shape to pray on our own, but become distant and circumstances, our words apparent to turn aside from the maximum, but He, at our appeal, stirs our hearts to move headed for Him, gives life to our prayers and deigns to crack. So we select every one protection and help in all time of craving.
